Happy Veteran's Day! Today we turn our attention to the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to serving our country. Whether they are our friends, family, coworkers, or clients, we want to show these individuals how much their service and sacrifice mean to us. Here we discuss a few ways to express gratitude this Veteran's Day.
1. Donate!
Many non-profit organizations are working every day to support the veterans in our country. Your donations can help reintegrate service members after discharge and support their access to important benefits. Not sure which to choose? Ask a vet!
2. Give Miles
If you have frequent-flier miles saved up, it is possible to donate them to service members and families. The Fisher House Foundation's Hero Miles Program provides free airfare to family members of seriously ill or injured service members, so that they may be together during difficult times.
3. Volunteer
Even if a monetary contribution isn't feasible, anyone can contribute their personal time and energy to programs that benefit veterans. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals serve the needs of many veterans in the community and are often in need of volunteer support.
4. Hire a Vet
Fridge leaking again? Seek out a veteran-run business the next time you need work done around the house, a cake for your kid's birthday, or your computer de-bugged. If you help manage your place of business, make efforts to improve veteran hiring practices there.
5. Know a Vet
When we meet a veteran, it is customary to say, "Thank you for your service." What does this phrase really mean? The answer can be very different depending on the veteran's branch, rank, and the period of time in which they served. Next time you meet a veteran, have a real conversation. Take the time to learn their story, and truly appreciate what the word "service" means to that individual.
