Like the name suggests, Lakeland is a community surrounded by beautiful lakes. Ideally located between Tampa and Orlando, Lakeland has it all—historic charm, natural beauty, a vibrant downtown and easy access to major cities in Florida. Lakefront promenades and trails offer plenty of opportunities for jogging, cycling and bird watching. Many of the lakes are frequented by swans that are descendents of a pair of swans that were sent to Lakeland by the Queen of England in the 1950s.

Fascinating Historic Districts

Much of Lakeland’s development began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today you can still see remnants of the past in the city’s historic neighborhoods including the Munn Park Historic District, Dixieland Historic District and the Lake Hunter Historic District. There are numerous Lakeland structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places including the Polk Theatre, Terrace Hotel and Frances Langford Promenade.

Architectural Legacy

In the late 1930s, Florida South College’s president Ludd Spivey invited esteemed architect Frank Lloyd Wright to design a master plan for buildings on the campus. Over the next 20 years, Wright completed 12 distinctive buildings for his ‘Child of the Sun’ project. This is now the largest collection of Frank Llyod Wright buildings in the world. The buildings are laid out like orange groves and feature Wright’s famous textile blocks.

Downtown Lakeland is a hub of activity with dozens of restaurants, bars, shops, spas and salons. Every first Friday of the month, the streets close to cars so pedestrians can enjoy fun events like the Classy Car Show and Makers Market.
