Fall Home Decor on a Budget

Fall brings with it a variety of senses. Pumpkin Spice Latte flavored coffee, cinnamon scented candles, cooler air are welcoming us into one of our favorite seasons. But, the pressures to run out to the store and start accumulating decor can take their toll. What shall I do this year? Keeping up with the trends and changing the home throughout the seasons can add stress and a real dent in your wallet. However, there are some ways to make your home feel new and bring some of the fall color into your decor. And, it doesn't have to cost you a fortune to do it.

First, think it through. Those tempting aisles and the endless rows of decor in the stores sure do add up fast. Where to begin; and how to end? Start by making a list and sticking with the plan. Browse through Pinterest, magazines and your favorite online decorating sites to help get current with trends and DIY ideas. Ideas are free. Then make your list. Think color pallet, available space, and purpose for the purchase. It may look amazing on their display, but will it play out in your home? Creating idea sections may help you organize those thoughts and ideas.

If you have young children, you may want to use Halloween decorations and incorporate them throughout your home. For example, if you think pumpkins are your "go to" then look for pumpkin decor that may be made of beading or made of fabric so that they can transition into Thanksgiving. Purchase a real pumpkin and use stencils with paint or paint on a face. Do this well before carving and your pumpkin will last much longer. Carved pumpkins don't last as long, especially in sunny Central Florida. Straw, an old wagon, or even the wheelbarrow you have in the garage can offer the perfect setting to display pumpkins. And, you didn't spend any money on these items.

One place to look that offers coupons and opportunities to create your own looks is JoAnn's Fabrics. It's not just a fabric store...trust me! Here you can find fabric, pillows, and premade decorations for indoors and outdoors, and even classes at great prices. Don't forget the coupons that are available through their App. They also have an array of silk flowers and leaves from which to choose from. You can take a candle and purchase your favorite color of silk leaves and use straight pins to anchor them to the bottom of the candle. You can use them to cover the entire candle or just half, down one side, swirl, anything goes. Voila'. You can also use a variety of yarns and ribbons (yes they will cut it for you) to make your best DIY decorations and enhance items you already have in your home.

Not to worry if time and creativity is too stressful to think about. Target and Home Goods offer rows of fall decorations from throws to pillows. You can absolutely change the look of a room just by adding a fall colored throw, candle, or pillows. Hobby Lobby, Walmart, and Target all offer excellent selections to enhance your home as well. If you have the rebates App or are frequent buyer members of any of these stores, you should take advantage of deals that they offer.

Some of our favorite purchases have come from the Farmer's Markets located in Windermere (Friday's on Main Street in front of Towne Hall) and Winter Garden Farmer's Market  (Saturdays). It's fun to browse the array of craft items made here by our own Florida artisans.

It's time to "fall back" into your home and enjoy the change of seasons. You may even want to light that candle and sip some apple cider or a pumpkin spiced latte while your dreaming up your decorating ideas.
