Prepping Your Florida Home For Hurricane Season

Floridians are no strangers to preparation for hurricane season. From June to December, hurricanes can bring storm-surges, wind, and flooding, which cause much damage to those directly in the path of the storm, and even the storms in the outer bands. Torrential rain and winds can ruin your fresh landscaping, roof, and even the pool screen!

Aside from the fully prepped Emergency Kit (check Publix, Walgreens, CVS) you also need to make sure your trees and shrubs are trimmed. By maintaining your landscaping before storm season, you can prevent flying debris, losing limbs and even toppling trees. If a tree is too top heavy, the rains can cause the tree to uproot. A trimmed tree, with lower limbs removed, can allow for wind to pass through those gaps. This can prevent major loss of trees and harm to anything in their way.

Storm coming? Bring in your pool furniture, umbrellas, flotation devices, patio tables, and any other free-standing objects that aren't buckled down. High winds can send them into your windows, homes, or even the neighbors yard. Bring them up close to your house, move them into your garage, stack floats in your pool/bath shower stall or one of the bathrooms to keep them safe. If you are in a hurry, you can even toss items into the pool, but be careful not to leave them as some outdoor furniture may contain metal and cause rusting.

Stocking up in propane, gas for your generator and car, batteries for your flashlights, and keeping your devices charged while you still have power are on the list of must-haves. Stock your kitchen with gallons of water, and even fill your tub to provide water to use for washing dishes, light bathing, and even for using the toilet.

Your pantry should have plenty of your favorite canned foods such as Dinty Moore Beef Stew, Campbell's soups, canned chicken, tuna, canned pastas and then be prepared to grill your frozen foods if you lose power.

Stay safe and be prepared.
