In 2004, Hurricane Charley made a direct hit on Florida’s southwest coast and caused a great deal of damage in Punta Gorda. However, this provided the opportunity to rebuild and revitalize many parts of the city. Today you will find beautifully restored historic buildings amidst modern homes and businesses.

Getting to and from Punta Gorda is easy, as the city has its own airport and it is located just off the I-75. Fort Myers is about a 40-minute drive from Punta Gorda, and Sarasota is about an hour away by car. Port Charlotte is just across the Peace River.

Punta Gorda has plenty to offer people of all ages, from challenging golf courses to beautiful beaches, art galleries, eateries, and protected parks. The oceanside location makes this the ideal destination for boaters, anglers, and those who enjoy water sports.

After Hurricane Charley, efforts were made to preserve Punta Gorda’s historic buildings, so you will find plenty of historic sites. For example, the A.C. Freeman House Museum was accurately restored to represent Queen Anne’s style architecture. It is now open to the public as a museum and houses the chamber of commerce.

The Blanchard House Museum is another interesting landmark. It was built as a bungalow in 1925 by Richard Blanchard, a prominent African American sea captain, and fisherman. It now provides a glimpse into what life was like at that time and pays homage to Punta Gorda’s rich African American heritage.

Outdoor enthusiasts won’t want to miss a trip along Harborwalk. This recreational trail runs for 2.4 miles along the waterfront and is great for walking, cycling, or jogging. The trail ends in the popular dining and shopping complex of Fisherman’s Village.

The Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park is located in the south of the city and is home to numerous hiking trails, paddling paths, and birdwatching spots. Ponce De Leon Park is right on the waterfront and has a beach and a boardwalk that winds through mangroves.

Golfers can tee off at a number of courses in and around Punta Gorda. These include the Seminole Lakes Country Club, the Blue Heron Pines Golf Course, and the Twin Isles Country Club.
