Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach is a quaint seaside city that shares a ‘fast past’ with its neighbor to the south, Daytona Beach. Some of the first automobile races took place along the long, hard-packed white sand at Ormond Beach, earning the area the title ‘Birthplace of Speed’. Yet despite its reputation for speediness, the pace of life is relatively slow in Ormond Beach. The small-town charm, sweeping ocean views, stunning trails, and prime Florida Atlantic coast real estate make this a highly sought-after destination for homebuyers and visitors alike.

About Ormond Beach

Ormond Beach is located just north of Daytona Beach on Florida’s Atlantic coast. Daytona Beach is just a 15-minute drive from Ormond Beach. The drive to Orlando from Ormond Beach can take anywhere from one hour to two hours depending on traffic.

The history of the city dates back to 1643 when a ship carrying a group of Quakers blew off course and washed up ashore. The travelers were on their way to New England, but decided to settle here. The city was later named after a sea captain named James Ormond I who brought Franciscan settlers to Florida.

Today Ormond Beach has a resort-like atmosphere thanks to its beautiful beach and parks. However, most of the people in Ormond Beach are permanent residents. The city has become somewhat of a bedroom community for people who commute to work in Orlando and Daytona Beach.

Ormond Beach Amenities & Attractions

Ormond Beach has all the amenities you would expect of a beachfront community in Florida. There are plenty of green spaces to explore, as well as enticing restaurants, shops, grocery stores, recreational facilities, and schools.

Spend your morning biking around the Ormond Scenic Loop under a canopy of trees. Andy Romano Beachfront Park is the perfect place to spend your afternoon on the beach as it has pavilions, a playground, and a splash pool for the kids.

Outdoors types can explore Tomoka State Park with its nature trails and lagoons. Popular activities at the park include canoeing, fishing, and bird-watching. You can even stay overnight at one of the full-facility campsites.

After having fun in the Florida sunshine, enjoy casual dining at Ormond Garage, a converted 1904 car garage for race cars that were participating in the beach races. The garage was the first ‘gasoline alley” before Indianapolis Speedway and gave drivers and mechanics a place to rest their heads before and after the race.

If you are looking for an equally historic, but elevated dining experience be sure to check out Rose Villa Southern Table and Bar. Built in the late 1800s, the building was a bed and breakfast and later a real estate office. In 2007 it was restored to its Victorian-era glory.
