Eustis History

Eustis is one of a handful of towns in Lake County that dates back to the 1870s. Eustis was primarily settled after the Civil War era when settlers continued their trek south from other states into Florida. Eustis is named after Colonel Abraham Eustis who served in the US Army in the early nineteenth century. Several homesteaders arrived in Eustis in late 1875.

Before the age of Rail Roads in much of Florida, the primary way of traveling was by large steamboats. Cruising down the St. Johns River and into Lake Eustis was very manageable. Soon, Eustis became the "Orange Capital of the World". There was even a research center created in the town limits to study plants and they later were pioneers in the research of hybridization of citrus.
