About Gotha, FL

Founded in 1884, a German Immigrant, H. A. Hempel after buying 1000 acres. He laid out the town and named it after his hometown, Gotha, Germany – he encouraged many German families and even families from the cooler Northern areas to relocate to Florida for the warm climate and mild winters.

His passion for printing encouraged him to send pamphlets to those in Germany, imploring them to come to Florida for the warmer weather and mild winter months. In order to generate lumber, Hemple established a sawmill which created lumber for a general store, a post office, a school, a community hall, and other buildings in Gotha. This mill also supplied shingles for many of the first homes in Altamonte Springs, Winter Park, and Maitland - he also provided the crates for one of our biggest exports - Oranges.

Today, Gotha is home to Yellow Dog Eats, here you can have some delicious Florida-inspired BBQ fusion cuisine that locals and visitors alike rave about. This Pet-Friendly hangout is located right downtown and offers a variety of eclectic artwork, menu items, and delicious food. Enjoy their covered outside patio and bask in Florida sunshine. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty with these monster sandwiches or wraps!! Keep your eyes peeled, you may see the beloved feline friend, Montel! He loves to join you for a bite to eat, and may even sit at your table to provide you with some company.
